First of all, let’s be clear: in this article I’m not talking about large families or people buying 1 or 2 products extra. I’m talking about people fighting over toilet paper, carts full of a product and not willing to share, people stealing from other carts while having a full cart themselves and other general selfish behaviour. What the fuck is wrong with you?
I’m in shock
Last week our prime minister made a public announcement regarding the corona-crisis. In this announcement he asked society not to hoard groceries, since there is plenty available and supermarkets will stock up every day. How did the Dutch respond? By hoarding all the things. It’s unbelievable. Since last Thursday shelves have been empty because supermarkets just can’t keep up with all these hoarding people thinking they need 2600 rolls of toilet paper. There have been assaults, arguments, lines and lines of people before 9 am and I just can’t. I cannot fathom how people can be this selfish. I cannot fathom how people think they need this much stuff while grocery stores are open, while there is plenty in warehouses. I cannot and will not feel sorry for these hoarders who are complaining they’ve been called out by the normal part of society. If anything, they should feel ashamed.
Enjoy your selfishness
You know why they should be so ashamed, besides for fighting over a roll of shitpaper? Because all those people working in healthcare, the people who we all rely on, cannot buy dinner. They cannot buy toilet paper. They come to a supermarket after a long shift to find empty shelves. No bread, no meat, no vegetables, nothing.
Because there are families, some with children, who rely on the social system with just a few bucks a week. Who cannot buy anything to feed their family. It’s either all gone or just too expensive. People who have plenty to spend don’t hoard on the expensive stuff, they take the budget stuff. I’ve heard from people who cannot feed their children properly. Who’s bread was ripped from their hands by people with a cart filled with bread. I’ve heard of people who have absolutely nothing.
I’ve heard from mothers who cannot feed their babies because formula is stocked up by someone else. Stores cannot keep up. There are babies being hungry thanks to your selfishness. There are elderly, who already are at risk, not knowing what to eat because there is nothing left. There are people who are sick or with sick children who cannot buy medicine, because someone thought it was utmost important to have 60 boxes of pcm. Get the fuck out of here.
I hope this throne of toiletpaper is soft enough for your selfish ass. With all this pressure of guilt knowing people and children are hungry because of your behaviour pushing you more and more into your seat.
Luckily, there are so many people willing to share. Willing to go out of their way to help another. There are Facebook groups offering help to those in need. There are people driving everywhere to collect groceries to help another. There are people cooking meals for other families. People buying formula for strangers, mothers pumping milk for other babies.. These people, they deserve to be in the spotlight. These people are what we all should strive to become. We are all in this mess together, and we won’t get anywhere with selfishness.
